Versions
This site rebuilds on purpose. The identity stays locked, the mask, the waveform, the palette hues and the voice. The structure has to change every time, and a rebuild that keeps the same shape has failed. Eight builds are preserved now, newest first, each one a link you can open exactly as it shipped.
Open any build
This is the only place the version switcher lives now. It used to sit on every page, which meant every visitor met seven options about a thing nobody had explained to them yet. That is effort spent on the furniture instead of on what you came for.
v009/v008/v007/v006/v005/v004/v003/v002/v001Restructure, not restyle. Five redesigns in a row did not fix the real complaint, because the complaint was never the paint: the navigation was still the flat list it had been when the site had five pages, and it now has sixty. So this build changes the shape. Five doors at the top on every page, Learn, Recommends, Studio, Play and Shop, each one a coherent group rather than a trimmed count. Tech Watch and The Cypher merged into one door with sub-navigation, because they were always the same kind of writing about two different kinds of thing. Everything that was crowding the top level, Versions, Colophon, Dispatches and the edition switch, moved to the menu and the footer. The guides index became filterable and searchable, and the five part series became one card that opens instead of five that look unrelated. Same locked colours, same waveform, same voice, same identity. New skeleton.
- StructureFive doors as the top level nav on every page of both editions, in a deliberate order: the first and last item in a row are the two people remember.
- MergedTech Watch and The Cypher are one door, Recommends, split by kind instead of by which week they started. Both original URLs still serve their own pages.
- Moved outVersions, Colophon, Dispatches and the Plain English switch left the top level for the menu and the footer.
- SwitcherThe version switcher came out of the page chrome entirely and lives only on this page.
- GuidesTopic filter, a client side search over a build time index, read times measured from the real page, and the five part series collapsed into one expandable card.
- CrowdingFewer and larger cards, one card treatment reused everywhere, and real whitespace between groups instead of inside them.
- KeptThe mask, the alive waveform, the locked palette with no new base hue, both music players, all three arcade games, and every existing URL.
Total rebuild, from zero. The previous six builds were the same document restyled, so this one threw the document out. New stylesheet and new templates written from scratch, no inheritance from any earlier skin. The horizontal nav bar went, replaced by a full screen overlay menu. The card grid went, replaced by asymmetric editorial composition. Display type became the artwork, set genuinely large. The KC mask became a persistent WebGL presence that moves with the scroll instead of a hero that scrolls away. Honest verdict: it was the best looking build yet and it still did not fix navigation, because a beautiful menu is still a menu you have to open. That lesson is what produced v008. Preserved here at /v007 exactly as it shipped.
- CompositionAsymmetric, full bleed, huge display type up to sixteen viewport widths, one idea per screen.
- NavigationFull screen overlay menu as a designed moment, plus the command palette.
- SceneThe WebGL mask persists behind everything and evolves as you scroll.
- LessonHiding a flat list behind a beautiful door does not make it a structure.
Full cyberpunk, first WebGL pass. The mask became a real 3D object with a cyan rim light and an emissive waveform mouth, and neon glow arrived, all derived from the locked colors. Honest verdict: it was still the v005 document with a cyberpunk skin bolted on, so it read as the same site dressed up. That lesson is what produced v007. Preserved here at /v006 exactly as it shipped.
- AddedThe first WebGL hero, command palette, and a colophon.
- LessonA restyled document is still a document. A new coat of paint is not a new building.
The modern leap. A real modern typeface took over the headlines and body copy, the mono dropped to an accent layer, and flat rows became designed panels with depth. Preserved here at /v005.
- TypeSpace Grotesk display, Inter body, both self hosted. Mono demoted to an accent.
Instrument panel, alive and reactive. The waveform became an instrument that responds, publishing a live amplitude every frame. Preserved here at /v004.
- ShapeInstrument panel home, status bar chrome, live readouts.
Color arrives. The four section colors moved from hairlines to structure, and the home became a signal board of full width channel bands. Preserved here at /v003.
- AddedStructural color and the three way version switcher.
One generation up. Flat rows gained depth, the header waveform became a live travelling wave, and the field logs split into a Story register over a Build register. Preserved here at /v002.
- AddedThe persistent version switcher.
Terminal ledger. The original build, one mono face on a flat dark ground, content stacked as ledger rows. Frozen here at /v001, which is the point of keeping it.
- KeptThe locked token layer every build since has inherited unchanged.
