Short films made on one graphics card

What you will find here

  • Five short films, free to watch and free to keep
  • All of them made at home on one second hand graphics card
  • Why that is worth pointing out at all

Five short films, made from beginning to end on one second hand graphics card in a spare room. No studio, no stock footage, no subscription, and no rented computers anywhere.

The music, the pictures and the movement were all produced on that one machine, and nothing left the building.

Why this is the point, not just a hobby

Everybody selling you a creative tool wants a monthly fee and wants your files kept on their computers. This is the same job done on hardware that is already paid for, with software that costs nothing, entirely offline.

Nobody was given a credit card number to make any of this.

The three newest

Made in one night. A hundred and two separate animated clips between them, and no shot is repeated, either within a film or across them.

  1. Neon Sermon

    Festival dance music · 1 minute 15 · 33 clips

A packed warehouse, the crowd like a congregation, hands in the air, strobe lights doing the work of lightning. The loudest of the three, and the most communal.

  2. Ghost in the Signal

    Dark techno · 1 minute 9 · 33 clips

Alone in a vast room full of machines while something outside tries the locks. Cold blue turning to red and back again.

  3. Desert Protocol

    Melodic progressive · 1 minute 18 · 34 clips

A motorcycle, an empty desert highway, and a distant skyline a very long way off. It ends at sunrise. The widest and the loneliest of the three, and the best sounding.

The first two

  1. KC Vegas, the animated cut

    Festival dance music · 1 minute 17 · 40 clips

The first one where every single shot genuinely moves. Forty clips, one for each picture, none of them repeated.

  2. KC Vegas, the full length version

    Festival dance music

The longer cut of the same piece.

Watching and downloading them

The films themselves are large video files, so they live on the films page on the full site, where each one can be played in the page or downloaded in two sizes. Everything is free and there is nothing to sign up for.

If you want to make something like this yourself, the music side of the method is written up in the guide about building a music studio out of free software.
